The Five Question Leader: Work Less Hard, Have More Impact

This On-Demand event was originally presented on March 1, 2017 (60 min)

Managers and leaders find themselves stuck in three vicious circles. They’re frustrated by teams that have become over-dependent on them. They’re overwhelmed by the amount of work they have to do. And, they’re disconnected from their own Great Work—the work that has impact, the work that has meaning. Sound familiar?

Join training expert Michael Bungay Stanier as he shares how breaking out of those vicious circles is simpler than you might think. Understanding the power of Great Work and mastering the Five Essential Questions can help managers and leaders increase the focus, courage and resilience they need to have more impact in the work they do.

Attendees will learn

  • The three vicious circles that keep them – and their teams – stuck.
  • The difference between Good Work and Great Work – and why they should even care.
  • The three essential attributes of Great Work.
  • The five core questions they need so they (and those they lead) can focus on the work that matters.
  • Quick-to-master techniques to ask a question well. (It’s harder to do than it sounds!)
  • The Best Coaching Question in the World (it has just three words).
  • How to apply the New Habit Formula to convert insight into new, sustainable behaviors.

Michael Bungay Stanier is the founder and Senior Partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps organizations do less Good Work and more Great Work.

George Orwell said, “An autobiography is only to be trusted when it reveals something disgraceful.” In that vein, Michael Bungay Stanier was banned from his high school graduation for “the balloon incident,” was sued by one of his law school lecturers for defamation, and managed to give himself a concussion while digging a hole as a laborer…

Luckily, there’s also been some upside. He is the author of a number of books, the latest and greatest is The Coaching Habit. The one he is best known for with 90,000 copies sold is Do More Great Work. However, the one he’s proudest of is End Malaria, a collection of articles about Great Work from thought leaders that has raised about $400,000 for Malaria No More and reached #2 on

All of this is done as founder and Senior Partner of Box of Crayons, a company that helps organizations do less Good Work and more Great Work. Their focus is on helping time-crunched managers coach in 10 minutes or less, and their Fortune 500 clients include TD Bank, Kraft, Gartner, and VMWare.
