Overview

The very best leaders (e.g., Martin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Alan Mulally, Frances Hesselbein, Satya Nadella) are great because they possess high talent and high character. The most problematic leaders (e.g., Travis Kalanick, Bobby Knight, Elon Musk, Elizabeth Holmes, Kenneth Lay) are problematic because they possess high talent and low character.

The primary and linchpin differentiator between the best leaders and the most problematic leaders is “character.”

While we understand the value and importance of character development, we also know:

  • Most leadership development programs prioritize talent development over character development
  • 75% of organizations state that their leadership development programs are not as effective as they would like them to be
  • Most leadership developers are not clear on how to engage in character development with their leaders

In this session, Ryan Gottfredson, PhD, will help leadership developers understand what leadership character is, why it is so important for leaders, and how to develop it in leaders. Hint: Character development in leaders requires a form of development that differs from traditional leadership development efforts.

Elevate your leadership programs from the ordinary to the extraordinary by embracing the transformative power of character development. Join us and redefine leadership excellence.

Attendees will learn

  • Be able to clearly define what leadership character is.
  • Understand the pivotal role of character in distinguishing exceptional leaders from problematic ones.
  • Investigate the factors contributing to the perceived ineffectiveness of traditional leadership development efforts.
  • Recognize the inherent value of character development in leaders.
  • Learn a unique developmental approach that is best suited to enhance character development in leaders.
  • Gain direction on how to apply the appropriate strategies and tactics necessary for character development in leaders.

Leadership training is a $366 billion global industry. Despite that, 75% of organizations say their leadership development programs are not very effective. A primary reason for the lack of development effectiveness is because they almost solely focus on horizontal development (think “tooling up” one’s talent) instead of vertical development (think “leveling up” one’s character). Ryan Gottfredson helps organizations vertically develop their leaders so that they can lead and operate from a higher, more effective level.
