The access to and use of AI companions to help identify, clarify, and create developmental plans have seen exponential growth since the release of ChatGPT almost 24 months ago. When asked about the most frequent topics asked over the last 12 months, ChatGPT reports:

  1. Goal Clarity: What strategies can I use to clarify and prioritize my personal and professional goals effectively?
  2. Time Management: What techniques can help me manage my time better to ensure I’m focusing on the most critical tasks?
  3. Productivity Tools: Are there specific tools or apps you recommend to enhance productivity and stay organized?
  4. Habit Formation: What are some effective methods for building and maintaining positive habits that support my goals?
  5. Focus and Concentration: How can I improve my focus, especially in a distracting environment?
  6. Overcoming Procrastination: What actionable steps can I take to overcome procrastination and get started on projects I’ve been avoiding?
  7. Self-Reflection: What techniques do you suggest for regular self-reflection to assess where I am in relation to my goals?
  8. Work-Life Balance: How can I better achieve a healthy balance between my work responsibilities and personal life?
  9. Feedback Mechanisms: What approaches can I employ to seek and utilize constructive feedback to improve my effectiveness?
  10. Motivation Strategies: What are some effective ways to boost my motivation when I’m feeling uninspired or overwhelmed?
  11. Mindfulness Practices: How can incorporating mindfulness or stress management techniques enhance my overall effectiveness?
  12. Networking and Relationships: What strategies should I consider for building and maintaining meaningful professional relationships that can enhance my effectiveness?
  13. Skill Development: How can I identify and prioritize skill gaps that I need to address for increased effectiveness?

It is valuable to see what people are asking ChatGPT to help with. This gives us a sense of which topics are on others’ minds. As talent development professionals, it is helpful to know what individuals are seeking assistance with. This gives us a chance to anticipate and provide advice before they seek it elsewhere, assuming the database used to complete the analysis is accurate. A user may need to ask the same question at different times to ensure consistent information when using Open ChatGPT.

The Dangers of AI

People turn to AI engines because the responses are efficient, quick, and often quite pragmatic. However, that speed comes with a price. The AI engine is scouring the web for any information related to the question being asked, and, as experts have widely noted, AI companions hallucinate, generating false answers and fake references, and have no guardrails on the advice they may offer. And now research has shown that as AI content is being posted and re-scraped in additional searches, the content begins to degrade significantly.

The main peril in using an open AI engine is that the answers may or may not be accurate or comprehensive enough. The user has to ask themself, what is the degree of certainty that the proposed answers are properly created?

Researchers have just reported another serious issue with Open ChatGPT. As the engine is asked to create content that is then added to other websites and future articles, future “scrapes” of the content begin to distort the original content. In short, as more AI content is created and reused by AI, it tends to degrade in accuracy and comprehensibility. This again points to the importance of a research-based, original, and authentic database that is not augmented by AI-generated content.

Guidelines for Choosing an Accurate AI Database

The best solution is the selection of an AI engine that uses only a curated, fully research-vetted database and these attributes:

  • A database that covers an entire career from intern to retirement
  • A database that applies to the challenges and needs at all levels of organizational life, from individual contributors and managers to executives
  • A database that provides for multiple uses, such as job interview preparation, succession planning development, and coaching advice
  • A database that is constantly reviewed and updated means the AI engine can expand its capabilities exponentially, providing comprehensive answers.

 

Without a comprehensive, research-based, practice-tested, and multi-purpose database, the AI engine will provide incomplete answers and perhaps misguide individuals in significant ways.

AI companions learn from the questions being asked. And when that companion isn’t tethered to a curated database, what it learns can increasingly go off the mark. By extension, in a curated database, the AI companion becomes more robust.

AI companions that are focused and reliant on an appropriately curated database will provide significant support to learners, coaches, and facilitators as they face challenges in seeking to maximize talent throughout an organization or a career. The confidence individuals – learners or talent development professionals – have in the information produced by AI analysis plays an important role in how helpful and supportive it can be. Evidence-based action tips provide efficient and effective guidance on a given learning need.

Speed. Quality. Cost. These are the traditional variables used when evaluating a product. A quick, high-quality response to a query at a reasonable cost is a win-win. AI companions using an open web search to produce answers provide speed and low cost, but not quality. When a curated, research-based, protected database is used, the quality is unsurpassable.
