If you had no fear, what would you be doing?

If you had no fear, what would you be doing?

Just imagine if you had no fear, if you were “fearless”, what would you do?

Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.” – Ambrose Redmoon

I have always believed very strongly in the above words of Ambrose Redmoon, as his wisdom has provided me with an important touchstone whenever I have been personally challenged.

Like true friendship, true courage is only demonstrated during those times of difficulty and duress.

It is the decision to not go quietly into the night, but to look your greatest challenges in the eye and say while shaken, I will not be deterred and THIS is when you know you have true FEARLESSNESS, to face these ultra challenging moments and move beyond them! This week we will be exploring what it takes to move from fear to fearlessness.

In this blog post, we will explore:

  1. What is really holding you back.
  2. What motivates you and what’s your BIG WHY.
  3. Your core values and getting more of what really matters to you in life.

1. What is holding you back?

Then I’d like you to firstly ask, “what is really stopping me from doing the thing I would do if I had no fear?”

Now, what you will find is what’s holding us back is often our own mindset, or our own way of thinking. It’s the things we tell ourselves are true about what we can do and about how the world is, which can also be called limiting beliefs.

A limiting belief is a state of mind or belief about yourself that restricts you in some way. These beliefs are often false accusations you make about yourself that can cause a number of negative results. Indeed, a limiting belief is a judgment about yourself that you think to be true that restricts you in some way.

Self-talk is so important; what we say to ourselves determines our actions in our lives and our mood etc. You will likely know you have a limiting belief based on your self-talk and the things and stories you tell yourself internally, such as:

“I can’t do this.”

This results in anxiety because we have already told ourselves we are going to fail before we have even attempted it. We have already conditioned our subconscious minds with the result that you “can’t do this”. This is damaging and not kind to ourselves.

“People will judge me and I won’t be good enough, I’ll be found out…”
“It’s not safe for me to speak up or do that thing.”
“People don’t value me.”

Limiting beliefs restrict us from achieving desired results – how you condition your mind is everything, it determines the end result

I’ve found it useful to write down how whatever is stopping you impacts a fundamental area of your life, such as your relationships, health, finances, your own growth as a person. Let’s take the area of relationships – how is that thing that is stopping you impacting the relationship with yourself, your spouse, with your kids, you manager, colleagues at work, with friends? Ask yourself this question.

2. What’s your BIG WHY?

It’s so hard to be motivated to work hard every day if you don’t have a good reason to, isn’t it? You need something that inspires you, gets you moving each morning, and keeps you going during tough times. That’s your “BIG WHY.” The motivation behind everything you do. So, how do you find it? It can be tricky, but with a little digging and soul-searching, you’ll begin to find out what makes you tick and what living life with purpose looks like for you!

Your BIG WHY is your purpose for why you do what you do. When you reach milestones, your BIG WHY keeps you focused and pushing to go even further, to become the best version of yourself! It’s also why you keep going even when you want to give up. It can be people, places, or things. It’s what matters most to you!

3. Your Core Values / Getting More of What Matters Most To You

To become clearer on your Big Why and what this means for you, I’ll now just share some questions to get you moving.

  • What is the difference you want to make in the world?
  • What would you do with your days if you already had millions in the bank?
  • What is the biggest change you’d like to see on the planet?
  • What legacy would you like to leave for future generations?
  • What do you believe is the purpose of life, or your purpose on the planet?

What I’d recommend is you just take a piece of paper and write down your thoughts and to the questions I shared. Your answers will reveal more on your core values, what really matters to you, what you need in your life the most.

A large part of what Serena and I do is help clients get rid of the root cause of anxiety. We then support them to turn inwards and identify with who they are and how to get the life they want and love.

The Blocker to Success: Imposter Syndrome

Getting more of what we need to feel happy, valued and fulfilled in our life is often blocked by feelings of what is called impostor syndrome. Imposter syndrome is the condition of feeling anxious and not experiencing success internally, despite being high performing in external, objective ways. This condition often results in people feeling like “a fraud” or “a phony” and doubting their abilities.

As you can imagine, limiting beliefs and negative self-talk often leads to feelings of worry, feeling scared, not feeling good enough and very down. You might have imposter syndrome if you find yourself consistently experiencing self-doubt, even in areas where you typically excel. Imposter syndrome may feel like restlessness and nervousness, and it may manifest as talking negatively to yourself.

Imposter syndrome is an issue faced by so many of us at various points in our life and this particularly includes celebrities believe it or not.

Think about it like this: if celebrities such as Michael Jackson or Quincy Jones were worried about what the public thought about the songs they were creating in the studio… what a poorer life would we be living in without such universal, phenomenal, transformational music!

The trick is they had belief in themselves. They allowed their passion to soar through any self-doubt in what they were creating together and they achieved GLOBAL SUCCESS!
