Yesterday, we hosted a free webinar entitled, Talk Like a Leader: What Every Employee Needs to Hear with Diana Durek. Durek is a leadership development specialist with an emphasis on emotional intelligence and personal change. She spent 11 years with a leading, global psychological test publisher. There, she worked with clients as diverse as the U.S. Air Force, American Express, and Air Canada, building evidence-based models for predicting individual and organizational performance.

The objective of the webinar was to increase your ability to learn to decode the language of leadership, understand the power of words, and learn key phrases that inspire and support others.
The first step was a group exercise. Durek asked all participants to think of a leader who brought out the best in you. Then in the chat box, list that leaders characteristics.
The replies were many: empowered, confident, supportive, respected, valued – just to name a few.
Then she asked everyone to think think of a leader that did not bring out the best in you.
The replies there were also many: critical, micro-manager, insecure, not in tune with others.
When broken down like that, it is easy to see why being a good leader is a lot more productive and helpful than being a bad one!
Leadership is a relationship. A good leader must be in tune with, or on, the same wavelength as other people. It is a dialog rather than a monologue.
Messages that good leaders communicate are having a vision for the organization and having the skills to carry out that vision. A good leader must provide context and compassion. Not compassion as we think of it today, but compassion on the sense of knowing and caring about those being led and creating a positive and emotional tone in the relationship.
Good leaders must have a vision for the organization. 82% of senior managers have a definite vision for their organization.
As a leader, you must do more than just communicate your vision. You must inspire as well.
Being focused and being action-orientated are also key in good leaders. Forward looking people make the best leaders.
Another key skill in leadership is credibility. One can demonstrate credibility by:
- Being an expert
- Being yourself
- Keeping your word
- Leading by listening
- Watching your body language
Durek also spoke about DWYSYWD. In other words, Do What You Say You Will Do. It is so vital to be credible and accountable.
“That was my fault and I accept full responsibility” is a phrase that should not be unheard of by a good leader!
“Is there a better way? Why? How?” is another key phrase in effective leadership.
There are many more traits and attributes to a good leader. Probing, listening, trusting… Just to name a few.
